Great piece. Loved Sold a Story. Ohio resident and I can tell you first hand the damage F&P did to both my sons. Have had to have weekly tutoring on Wilson for both since 2021, on top of math for my oldest. This is in addition to the extra support at school since both are on IEP for learning disabilities. Would love to see you also focus on math, total disaster for my 12 year old, there is some stupidity in the math programs for elementary - not enough on fundamentals too much theory. Middle school seems to be better but my oldest does not have a great foundation so he struggles and now convinced he’s just bad at math. He isn’t - just had bad habits I trying to unteach and really be active with his math.
Good day. I’m a cognitive scientist and math specialist (recently retired) in Ohio. I can tell you that math instruction in the state is a mess. ODE has little expertise in guiding math instruction. Instead they heartily support education fads that have dismantled mathematics learning for decades and run counter to SoL principles. I’ve worked on a number of ODE math committees and finally gave up. Their curriculum guidance to districts for math instruction is abysmal. My former district just adopted a terrible curriculum this past year based on EdReports recommendations. It emphasizes problem based learning and lacks any basic skills teaching and support. I hope that math instruction becomes the next focus… and quickly.
